GMO Health Risks Revealed in New Study: What Happens When We Wait

Genetically Modified Food has been sold commercially since 1994. While many European countries have banned GMOs, widespread citizen initiative to ban in the US is continuously trumped by big money groups claimed to control the media and elections. The USA has opted to avoid the precautionary principle, playing a game of innocent until proven guilty with something that directly affects our health, entering the bodies of millions of Americans every day.

First-time Study Reveals Health Atrocities of Long Term GM Diets

A groundbreaking first-time study by French scientists was published in September 2012 in The Food & Chemical Toxicology Journal, revealing the effects of lifelong GM corn diets in rats. Even exposure to small amounts of Monsanto Roundup weedkiller GM corn developed mammary tumors and severe liver and kidney damage in as little as four months, according to UK publication The Grocer. Findings are stunning, grotesque and must be shared.

Natural News pulled these highlighted results from the study:

Up to 50% of males and 70% of females suffered premature death.

Rats that drank trace amounts of Roundup (at levels legally allowed in the water supply) had a 200% to 300% increase in large tumors.

Rats fed GMO corn and traces of Roundup suffered severe organ damage including liver damage and kidney damage.

The study fed these rats NK603, the Monsanto variety of GMO corn that’s grown across North America and widely fed to animals and humans. This is the same corn that’s in your corn-based breakfast cereal, corn tortillas and corn snack chips.

The liver and kidneys, associated with detoxifying the body, were primarily damaged, while the heart, adrenal glands, spleen and various direct and indirect consequences resulting from toxicity. Dr. Michael Antoniou, molecular biologist from King’s College London commented, “This research shows an extraordinary number of tumors developing earlier and more aggressively – particularly in female animals. I am shocked by the extreme negative health impacts.”

Why Isn’t This News Spread Throughout the USA Already?

News coverage has rippled through the US via health and justice dedicated news sources such as Food Matters and Natural News, while UK Daily Mail and others do their best to spread the word. Concern for the health of anyone and anything eating GM food or meat and dairy products fed GM diets is blatantly revealing. It’s staggering the news has not been more widespread throughout the US.

Staggering, yet appears to be the norm. Whatever is detriment to the environment or health of the nation has a track record of being associated with deep-pockets that places profit above all and have the authority to pull strings. This is nearly as grotesque as the photo of tumor-ridden rats.

Let’s look at a few corollary instances:

When the USDA and FDA mandated almond pasteurization, yet allowed companies to label them raw, and higher education protest riddled the streets of Quebec, US citizenry heard the faintest echo only if they tuned in. Here, we have well respected experts like Dr. Oz purporting detrimental advice in a cover story in TIME Magazine telling the public to buy GM food and the USDA is ok with GM salmon! AS AquaBounty’s AquaAdvantage GM salmon is in production for commercial sale, animals we eat and also produce the eggs and dairy we consume fight toxicity as long as they can, as toxic GM byproducts are doled to consumers at discounted prices until the animal dies an early death and also ends up on the discount shelves. Not to mention the extreme environmentally damaging aspects of feedlots and GM based food operations ridden with waste and chemicals that pass on to our mouths and ripple through groundwater. Apologies for the harsh reality.

What Happens When We Wait

Of course genetically engineering natural organisms and animals seems faulty, but until now it has not been definitively proven. Deep concern lies in the fact that premature decisions are made concerning what can not only potentially produce awful illness, disease and death to people and damage the environment, but also establish a system that supports it making it hard to change.

Thanks to French scientists, it’s now clearly proven that GM food is detrimental to life. Many European countries have banned GMO ingredients and others immediately banned production and import of all GMOs after the press release of this study in London. They recognized the threat and acted accordingly, noting seniority of the facts among all else.

The US, on the other hand, appears to wait. We started toying with genetic modification and implemented it thoroughly throughout the food system in the name of profits before conducting studies. Shouldn’t the studies have been done prior? A rat’s life is only 2 years long and serious results showed in as little as four months. Of course scientists are capable of completing such studies, but one can speculate that authority is not interested.

Instead, they wait to see what happens and hide any signs. The precautionary principle, toted for its grandeur of its intellectual, ethical and policy implications is clearly not taken into consideration. For another example, The National Cancer Institute, among others, reported that cell phone radio frequency is linked to cancer growth, but cell phones have not been around long enough for anyone to know the real implications. As cell phones turn into smart phones producing higher levels of damaging frequency, we wait for results.

It’s a battle between the majority and the powerful minority. Unfortunately, we in the majority haven’t been able to reach significant levels of influence–yet.

What You Can Do

First and foremost–get involved. Make a splash, however you can. Google it, read up online, see what’s happening in your area, region and nationally, boycott GM food products and participate in non-GMO and GMO labeling campaigns. Other countries have mandated GMO labeling and banned them–we can too. The Centre for Global Research on Globalization wrote an article with reasoning as to when and why France banned GM corn during mass US protests against Monsanto. Clearly our protests were not as successful. In part, because more people are not aware of the facts–and not expected to be since mainstream media appears to be in the hands of those who want to conceal truth.

The truth, however, is out there–seek it and be heard.

NonGMO labelImplications stretch even further, where pesticides and GMOs have been linked to Colony Collapse Disorder in bees; without bees, we have no food. France also banned pesticides when beekeepers protested in response to colony collapse disorder, as discussed in the film Vanishing of the Bees. This reinforces that active citizenship can render significant results.

Taking action in your locale can also produce local results, as Boulder County began phasing out GMOs last year with a successful voting ruled by the Food and Agriculture Policy Council and Parks and Open Space Advisory Committee.

Forget Iran, North Korea, Al-Qaeda or the Bankers, the biggest threat to humanity and the environment is Monsanto.

In other words–the US is its own greatest threat, and in the words of Arnold J Toynbee, “Civilizations die from suicide, not by murder.”

Thanks for sharing your concern and insight, Alex!

I agree, Monsanto is WAY too influential and powerful. Thanks for sharing this info.
